CONFERENCE BY THE SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE, TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF CRETE

"Architectural Education and Practice: International Challenges and Greece"

Date: November 11th and 12th, 2023, Chania

The School of Architecture, recognizing the significant changes that have occurred in the social, economic-technical, and educational fields, organizes a conference on the topic "Architectural Education and Practice: International Challenges and Greece," opening a dialogue for the formation of architects capable of keeping up with the new realities of the era. The need to redefine the fields, methods, and practices of architectural education is urgent today.

Architectural education at the beginning of the new century has undergone significant changes in terms of means, priorities, and learning outcomes as it is called to respond to new, rapidly changing, and complex environments. The synthesis of skills, scientific and technical knowledge is enriched with the necessary development of communication, teamwork, time management, flexibility, etc. Learning focused on practical problem-solving is complemented by learning that incorporates research and creative design.

Similar radical changes are also observed in architectural practice. The use of new technologies, emerging needs for spatial design focused on sustainability, responsible use of materials, and the need for new tools for crisis management indicate new paths for research, teaching, and practice.

The Conference serves as a space for dialogue on these developments in architectural education and practice, for the "gaps" that may have emerged between them, as well as for the new directions and emerging trends in this relationship. It is addressed to members of the academic community, postgraduate students, doctoral candidates, as well as professionals and interested organizations in the built environment.

The topics of the conference are as follows:

A. Teaching Architectural Design:

  • Introduction to Architectural Studies
  • The contribution of design studios to the production of architectural knowledge
  • Architectural education and interdisciplinarity for crisis management (environmental, socio-economic, health, natural disasters, etc.)
  • The role of theoretical critical thinking in architectural education.

B. Technology in Architectural Education:

  • New technologies in architectural education (digital-analog design)
  • Advanced, sustainable, and tectonic materials for architecture
  • Construction processes in architectural education
  • Designing from the public space to the public-digital sphere

C. Curriculum and Contemporary Educational Directions:

  • Informal and formal education - directions and priorities of the curriculum
  • Relationship between architectural education and applied practice
  • Function of international accreditations in architectural education
  • Contemporary research and education.

The conference will take place at the Center of Mediterannean Architecture (KAM) in Chania.
